bereft

so long bereft
from little hurts
and little loves
I could not leave behind
a fortress made
of lives unlived
built upon
the bedrock of my mind
no storm arose
no gale force
could topple towering woe
no newer love
came to replace
the ones I can't let go
the masonry
is holding still
I chisel every day
until I dismantle
brick by brick
false dreams
of the ones that got away
