though eroded
dauntless

in a war we all lose
time's sweeping battles
war much harder
than the campaigns of his youth
though not dissimilar to
the sweaty jungle
guerrilla warfare
of PNG in WWII
betrayed by
flesh and fog and fug
a shower and shave
victory
against an ignoble enemy
