we nominate and elevate
hoping they are meritorious
and represent the best in us
and won't desecrate our trust
so consumed by lust for power
that they disregard the hour
not recognizing the time has come
when each and every one must
account for who they follow
and for what they've done
or allowed, in their name,
to be done
